Wyoming

Nearly all the way across Wyoming in one day. From the Black Hills, South Dakota and snowing, to the National Grassland of Wyoming, bright sunshine, cattle and oil wells. Then into mesa country - where the flat topped hills look like chocolate cake with icing sugar or gingerbread houses. Miles of snow breaks (see photo). I thought they were for cattle sheltering but it is so windy here, they're to stop the snow drifting across roads. We've had temperatures wavering between +1 and -1 degrees Celsius during the day. Don't know what the minimums were. The wind was so strong in a lot of places - the windchill would have been great. We drove all day and the scenery changed dramatically almost hourly. We drove towards a big snowstorm but eventually it bypassed us. Stayed in Green River, Wy, after driving across interstate 80 - big trucks mainly. Am now adept at 'wrong' side of the road and passing big trucks. We arrived Green River at night on Sunday, everything shut. We booked into a motel that was just a touch above seedy. Went to a tiny bar and they had free ham, beans and cornbread for Sunday night football. I asked for red wine - not a regular choice for bar patrons. It was served in a plus sized glass - full. John had local beer which is served with orange slices. It was a fun night laughing with locals. After consulting with the visitors centre in Green River who said Yellowstone Park was open, we drove to Jackson Hole, which is on the way. When we went to the information there, they said, No, definitely closed. We booked into a beautiful motel which has antique furniture, a huge room,an indoor pool but very reasonable because it's off season. Today we will go to the Grand Teton park most of which is still open then will have to drive out and go through Idaho to get to our destination - Montana. Did I mention that Green River is a HUGE railroad depot - interesting for some people.
